Time does fly.  It's hard to believe that three years have passed since Governor Schwarzenegger held his historic Summit on Health, Nutrition and Obesity.  The Summit had it all: celebrity guests, corporate commitments to improve health, the release of a bold vision statement, and the signing of landmark legislation to improve nutrition in schools.  The Strategic Alliance for Healthy Food and Activity Environments marked the summit by releasing Taking Action for a Healthier California, a document which identified concrete steps that business and government could take to create healthier places to live and work.  Each of the 10 priority recommendations in Taking Action was later included in the California Obesity Prevention Plan, released in 2006.

While the passion of the Summit has been dimmed by the state’s daunting fiscal crisis and by efforts to radically reform health care, the problems of poor health associated with poor nutrition and physical inactivity remain.  There is still plenty that can and must be done.

The Strategic Alliance would like to invite you to help celebrate the 3rd Anniversary of the Governor’s Summit.  Not sure what to get the Governor?  We are sure he’d appreciate a simple phone call.  Please wish him a “Happy Anniversary” but also urge him to do now what he did at the Summit: sign healthy food and activity legislation into law.

There are a number of bills on the Governor's desk that fit within the bold vision the Governor launched at the Summit.  The actions proposed in these bills also fit within fiscal realities, as they either utilize federal funds or require no state resources.
